The answer sheet

Can I eat it? Every Japanese food we’ve checked, answered.

One page, one verdict each. We read the manufacturer’s own label or ask the kitchen, then say plainly whether it’s vegan — and when the honest answer is “it depends”, we say that instead of guessing.

Two ingredients decide most of these answers

Dashi (fish stock) is in far more Japanese food than it looks — miso soup, noodle broth, simmered vegetables — and mirin, the sweet cooking sake, is in most sauces. Neither shows up in the dish’s name. That is why a vegetable dish can still be non-vegan, and why the phrase card below matters more than any single answer here.

These don’t reduce to one word — the answer turns on which version you’re handed — so we link the article rather than print a badge that would misreport it.

Every verdict here is the one stated in the article, checked against the manufacturer’s own label or confirmed in person, and dated there. Recipes change: if a label now disagrees with us, the label wins — please tell us.
