Vegan Restaurants in Osaka: 7 Fully-Vegan Kitchens, Verified 23 September 2026

As of 23 September 2026, seven Osaka kitchens state on their own website that nothing on their menu is animal-derived: Paprika Shokudo Vegan, Shinsekai Paprika Shokudo, Shojin Sushi Minamo, Green Earth, MERCY Vegan Factory, Naki vegan sweets and Aju. Two others — a vegan ramen specialist and an okara-takoyaki stand — publish no address or hours we could reach, so confirm them before you go.
Everything below — addresses, opening hours, closed days, the two prices we quote — was read off each shop's own website or official Instagram on 23 September 2026. Where we could not reach an official page, we say so instead of guessing, because small vegan kitchens in Osaka change their hours often and a wrong opening time costs you a meal.

Nishi Ward — the two Paprika kitchens
Paprika Shokudo Vegan (パプリカ食堂 Vegan) — Alivio Shinmachi 1F, 1-9-9 Shinmachi, Nishi-ku; 06-6599-9788. Its official site states plainly: 「パプリカ食堂は100%植物性、可能な限りオーガニック材料にこだわっています」 — 100% plant-based, organic where possible. Open 11:30–15:00 (food L.O. 14:00) and 17:30–21:30, closed Wednesdays. Two minutes from Yotsubashi Station exit 2, five from Shinsaibashi exit 3. This is the original of the Paprika family — both the Shinsekai branch below and Shojin Sushi Minamo list it as a related shop on their own pages.
Shinsekai Paprika Shokudo Vegan&Glutenfree (新世界パプリカ食堂) — 3-4-5 Ebisuhigashi, Naniwa-ku, directly behind the Kushikatsu Daruma branch; 06-6567-9376. Fully plant-based and gluten-free (「100%植物性、グルテンフリーにこだわっています」), and the whole point of the place is rebuilding Osaka's richest street food — vegan kushikatsu, takoyaki, ramen — so nobody at the table has to hold back. Open 12:00–15:00 (L.O. 14:30) and 17:30–21:30 (L.O. 21:00). Its official page lists the closed day as 「水曜日+不定休」 — Wednesday plus irregular closures, which is exactly why you should check @shinsekai.paprika_vegan before you walk over. Three minutes from Dobutsuen-mae on the Midosuji line, ten from JR Shin-Imamiya. Full write-up: our Shinsekai Paprika Shokudo guide.
Minami (Shinsaibashi, Namba, Honmachi)
Shojin Sushi Minamo (精進寿司 みなも) — Ace Building B1, 1-10-4 Nishi-Shinsaibashi, Chuo-ku; 06-4256-3662. A vegetable-sushi counter committed to 「VEGAN、全素、GLUTEN-FREE」 — vegan, quánsù (the Chinese Buddhist standard, which also excludes the five pungent vegetables) and gluten-free. Dinner only: 17:30–21:30, L.O. 21:00, closed Wednesdays and Thursdays. Two minutes from Shinsaibashi exit 8, directly behind Hotel Nikko Osaka. Its own site lists Paprika Shokudo Vegan and Shinsekai Paprika as related shops, so the same kitchen discipline applies.
Green Earth — Kyuho Building 1F, 4-2-2 Kitakyuhojimachi, Chuo-ku; 06-6251-1245. The English page says it in four words: "Green Earth is a vegan restaurant." It is a weekday-lunch place and nothing else — Monday to Saturday 11:30–17:00, last order 16:30, closed Sundays, public holidays, Obon and New Year. The site notes the hours changed in 2024, so older guides that send you here for dinner are wrong.
Naki vegan sweets — 1-5-5 Namba, Chuo-ku (〒542-0076). Gluten-free vegan sweets: baked goods, raw cakes and drinks. Open 13:00–21:00, closed Wednesdays. Treat it as the dessert stop at the end of a Minami day rather than a meal.
Central — MERCY, and the Kita mix-up
MERCY Vegan Factory 大阪本店 — 2-4-15 Kawarayamachi, Chuo-ku, ground floor west side, facing Kawarayamachi Ground; 06-6718-5846. It is certified under Japan's vegan JAS scheme (「MERCY Vegan Factoryは農林水産省ヴィーガンJAS認証取得店です」) — the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries mark, which is the only government-backed vegan certification in Japan and a far harder claim than a self-declared menu. Its official page gives the hours as 8:00–17:00 (last order 16:00) and 18:00–21:00, broken down into three services — morning 8:00–10:30, lunch 10:30–16:00, dinner 18:00–21:00 — and lists the closed day as Saturday. Seven minutes from Tanimachi 9-chome exit 2.
One thing worth knowing before you plan the walk: Tanimachi 9-chome is in central Osaka, walkable from Namba and Dotonbori. It is not in Kita (Umeda).
Kita — Aju, and why you cannot book it
Aju (あじゅ) — Kawasan Building 1F, 1-10-14 Nakazaki, Kita-ku (〒530-0016). A one-person vegan izakaya rebuilding Japanese pub food out of soymeat and tofu. Its own FAQ is unusually exact: "None of our dishes use any animal-derived ingredients."
Four things the guides get wrong about Aju, all from the shop's own site:
- There are no reservations and no phone line. "As a one-person operation, managing reservations isn't feasible, so we do not accept reservations or inquiries." Takeout is the same — turn up, order, wait. Any article telling you to book a table at Aju is wrong.
- Groups of five or more are not accepted, and the total number of guests who need a seat, children included, is capped at four.
- It is the opposite of gluten-free. "We cannot accommodate wheat or soy allergies — every dish on our menu contains both."
- It can cook without the five pungent vegetables, or without alcohol, if you say so when you order — useful for Buddhist and Jain visitors.
Hours: lunch 11:40–13:30 (closed Monday and Tuesday), dinner 17:30–21:30 (closed Monday). From Nakazakicho Station exit 1, turn right toward the shopping arcade, left at the first intersection where a taiyaki shop stands on the corner, then left again after 50 metres. Cards and e-money are accepted; there is no Wi-Fi and no parking. The signature dishes on its official menu are vegan okonomiyaki at ¥1,420 and vegan yakitori at ¥1,680 (prices as of 2026-09-23). If you want to know how okonomiyaki goes vegan at all, is okonomiyaki vegetarian? covers the egg and dashi problems Aju works around.
Two more we could not confirm
We are listing these separately because on 23 September 2026 we could not reach a single page on which the shop itself publishes an address or opening hours, or confirms that it is currently trading. Do not build a day around either one.
Vegan Ramen by Playpen Friends — Osaka; we could not confirm the ward. Its official account, @veganramen_by_playpenfriends, carries the name ヴィーガンラーメン専門店 — vegan ramen specialist. No page we could reach has the shop itself publishing an address, opening hours or closed days, and third-party listings contradict each other — one places it in Kitahorie in Nishi Ward, another in Nishi-Shinsaibashi in Chuo Ward — so check the Instagram before you set out. If ramen is the reason for the trip, our best vegan ramen in Tokyo guide shows what the category looks like when a shop does publish everything.
Oko Tako — Osaka; the shop itself publishes no address we could reach. Its official account, @oko_tako_osaka, reads: 「小麦粉不使用、グルテンフリーの『おからのたこ焼き』 VEGAN/VEGETARIANの方も安心してお食事いただけます!」 — takoyaki made from okara (the soy pulp left over from making tofu) with no wheat flour, which vegans and vegetarians can eat safely. Note what it does not say: it does not state that the entire shop is plant-based, and it publishes neither an address nor opening hours. We could not reach any page on which this shop confirms that it is currently trading, so treat it as unconfirmed rather than as a plan.
⚠️ Two different Osaka businesses go by OKO. The okara-takoyaki account above is not OKO(オコ), whose own booking page lists 1-13-9 Higashi-Shinsaibashi, 5th Ten'i Building 2F, and hours of 18:00–02:00 Sunday to Thursday and 18:00–05:00 on Friday and Saturday. That page describes the place as an izakaya and makes no vegan claim at all. Before you follow any round-up to “OKO” in Osaka, check which of the two it means — they are different businesses. If you are chasing the dish rather than the shop, is takoyaki vegan? explains what has to change for it to be.
The trap everyone hits — dashi
The one thing that quietly turns a vegetable dish non-vegan in Osaka is dashi: stock made from bonito flakes (katsuobushi) or dried sardines. It is the default in miso soup, in okonomiyaki and takoyaki batter, and in sauces and broths. Kombu and shiitake dashi are the plant-based exceptions, but you cannot assume them. At the seven kitchens above the problem is already solved; everywhere else, the phrase to memorise is katsuo-dashi nashi de — "without bonito stock" — and you should ask about egg and dairy separately. Our is dashi vegan? explainer and the is Japan vegan-friendly? primer give you the rest of the wording.

When the shop you wanted is closed
Read the closed-day column again before you plan a day: Wednesday takes out three of the seven (both Paprikas and Naki), Saturday takes out MERCY, Sunday takes out Green Earth, and Monday takes out Aju. Stack a Wednesday lunch on Green Earth or MERCY, not on Minami.
If you are still stuck:
- Convenience stores. Lawson, FamilyMart and 7-Eleven carry accidentally-vegan staples — edamame, plain onigiri (check the filling), salads, fruit, dark chocolate and some plant-milk drinks. Scan for egg, dairy and bonito.
- Indian and Nepali curry houses. They are everywhere in Osaka; ask for a vegetable curry without ghee, cream or dairy.
- Go to Kyoto for the day. It is under an hour, and the temple-cuisine tradition means the vegan options are structured differently — see our vegan restaurants in Kyoto guide.
Bottom line
As of 23 September 2026, Osaka gives you seven kitchens that say in their own words that nothing on the menu comes from an animal, and two more we could not confirm from any page the shop itself controls. Build the day around the closed days rather than around the neighbourhoods, keep katsuo-dashi nashi de on your tongue for everywhere else, and if you also avoid gluten, our gluten-free vegan Japan guide is the place to start before you travel.
Places we’ve confirmed
Shinsekai Paprika Shokudou
Vegan takoyaki, kushikatsu and ramen versions of Osaka street food
A fully plant-based izakaya in Shinsekai (opened 2023) serving vegan, gluten-free versions of Osaka street food — takoyaki, kushikatsu and ramen — with no animal products and no fish dashi by design, so it sidesteps the bonito-dashi trap. 'Gluten-free' is the venue's own claim rather than a certification, so celiac diners should confirm dedicated-fryer and cross-contamination handling directly.

FAQ
- Which vegan restaurants in Osaka are genuinely fully vegan?
- Seven kitchens state it on their own website, checked 23 September 2026: Paprika Shokudo Vegan (Shinmachi), Shinsekai Paprika Shokudo (Ebisuhigashi), Shojin Sushi Minamo (Nishi-Shinsaibashi), Green Earth (Kitakyuhojimachi), MERCY Vegan Factory (Kawarayamachi), Naki vegan sweets (Namba) and Aju (Nakazaki). MERCY is additionally certified under Japan's government vegan JAS scheme. Two more are listed separately because we could not confirm them: Vegan Ramen by Playpen Friends, whose official account carries the name ヴィーガンラーメン専門店 (vegan ramen specialist), and Oko Tako, whose account says only that its wheat-free okara takoyaki is safe for vegans and vegetarians — not that the whole shop is plant-based. Neither publishes an address or opening hours we could reach.
- Can I book a table at Aju, the vegan izakaya in Nakazakicho?
- No. Aju's own site says the shop is run by one person and therefore takes no reservations and no inquiries, and keeps no phone line — for takeout as well as for dining in. Groups of five or more are not accepted, and the total number of guests who need a seat, children included, is capped at four. Lunch is 11:40–13:30 (closed Monday and Tuesday) and dinner 17:30–21:30 (closed Monday), as of 23 September 2026.
- Where can I eat vegan takoyaki, kushikatsu or okonomiyaki in Osaka?
- Shinsekai Paprika Shokudo at 3-4-5 Ebisuhigashi, Naniwa-ku lists vegan kushikatsu, takoyaki and ramen on its own menu page; it is closed Wednesdays plus irregular days, so check its Instagram first. Aju in Nakazaki serves vegan okonomiyaki made with soymeat instead of pork, listed at ¥1,420 on its official menu as of 23 September 2026. Oko Tako's official account says its wheat-free okara takoyaki is safe for vegans and vegetarians, but it publishes no address or hours and we could not confirm it is trading, so do not plan around it.
- Which Osaka vegan restaurant is open on a Wednesday?
- Not the two Paprika kitchens or Naki vegan sweets — all three close on Wednesdays, and Shojin Sushi Minamo closes Wednesday and Thursday. Green Earth is open Monday to Saturday 11:30–17:00 (last order 16:30), MERCY Vegan Factory closes only on Saturdays, and Aju serves lunch 11:40–13:30 and dinner 17:30–21:30 on Wednesdays. All hours read off each shop's own page on 23 September 2026.
- What is the biggest hidden non-vegan ingredient in Osaka food?
- Dashi — stock made from bonito flakes or dried sardines. It is the default in miso soup, in okonomiyaki and takoyaki batter, and in sauces and broths, so a dish with no visible meat can still be non-vegan. Kombu and shiitake dashi are the plant-based exceptions but cannot be assumed. Outside the fully vegan kitchens, order with the phrase "katsuo-dashi nashi de" (without bonito stock) and ask about egg and dairy separately.
